Interior Lighting Types

Track lighting - One of the most versatile of all available interior lighting sources.  Monorail, cable, and linear are the three most common types of track lighting.  From these types of track several different types of fixtures can be mounted including directional fixtures or pendants.  Track lighting can be used to light hard to illuminate areas in new construction and remodels of any style home.

Sconces - An indoor decorative lighting fixture with a flat side to be hung on a wall, that holds candles or lights.  Sconces can be utilized as decorative accents or they can also provide part of an overall general lighting scheme.

Chandelier - Multi-arm, decorative, often ornate ceiling light fixture that holds a number of bulbs. Chandeliers are most often used in Entries and Dining Rooms.  Often taking center stage and becoming a focal point of a space, chandeliers should be chosen with careful design consideration.  Dimmers should always be used with chandeliers.  Full brightness will rarely be necessary and by dimming the lighting to a soft glow similar to candle light an intimate atmosphere is created.

Bathroom/ Vanity Fixture - Lighting typically installed above a mirror in which two or more light bulbs form a bar or row. Vanity fixtures should provide bright light that is not too glary.  Bathroom mirror lighting can be supplemented with sconces to fill shadows and provide optimal lighting.

Ceiling Lighting - Attach to the ceiling with or without a gap between the fixture and ceiling.  When a gap is present the fixture is called a “Semi Flush”, because it’s not quite flush to the ceiling.  These fixtures can provide general light to a room but are not enough light alone.

Pendant - An ornamental hanging fixture with no multiple arms.  There are many varieties of pendants including mini pendants, inverted pendants, and large pendants.  Mini pendants come in unlimited shapes and colors and are ideal over an island to provide a splash of color and task light.  Inverted pendants and large pendants are often used in entries or over dining room tables.

Recessed Lighting – Lighting in which the housing and body of the lamp is recessed in the ceiling.  Recessed lighting can be installed in a new home or remodel and can provide task, general, and/or accent lighting depending on the type and location used.
