The Basics of Lighting
1. Know your budget. There is a lot of lighting out there and it can be easy to get carried away. Call for an idea of sites to find lighting within your budget.
2. Know your style and taste. Take a look around your home. What décor makes you the most comfortable? Look through magazines and find pictures of rooms that appeal to you. If possible, have color chips or fabric samples ready for when you make your lighting purchase.
3. Know what the area is used for. You will need different lighting for doing homework or food preparation then you will need for dining, entertaining or just passing through. Some areas will serve multiple purposes so you may need different types of lighting in a single location.
4. Where’s the Electricity? This is especially important for new construction or large remodeling jobs. Know where the outlets and electrical boxes are and be sure to think of all your options before deciding on where they will be. The less re-wiring you have to do the better for remodel jobs but for a new construction be sure and think ahead so that your happy with locations before it’s too late.
5. How big is it? Take a look at the size of the room. If you have a 10’ ceiling in your dining room, a 3 tier 21 light chandelier won’t work for you. Likewise, if you have a double sink vanity in the bathroom with 3 mirrors an 18” bath bar won’t be adequate. Scale can sometimes be difficult to determine in a showroom and is nearly impossible to do determine from a picture online, which is why we sometimes suggest our customers make a cardboard cut-out for special order fixtures, that allows you to hold it up where the fixture will be installed.
6. Where does the sun shine? That’s right! Natural light plays a large role in the type of lighting you need. Look at where the windows are and how much light they let in. Pay attention to large plants or trees that may partially block the sun’s natural rays. It is always important to consider both daytime and nighttime lighting when choosing lights for your room or home.
